Howard Zinn was one of the many disciples of investigative journalist George Seldes.
He was the author of more than 20 books, including “A People’s History of the United States”, a perpetual best seller.
Zinn’s perspective on war was not created in a vacuum.
During World War II Zinn was a bombardier in the 490th Bombardment Group,
His targets included Berlin, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary as well as Royan, a seaside resort in southwestern France which on which he dropped napalm.
He documented the last bombing in his book “The Politics of History”, the research included him discovering that 1.000 civilians were killed in that raid and the raid itself, ordered in the last three weeks of the war, was primarily a career-building exercise for the officers involved.
Many Vets share Zinn’s feeling about their war experiences. Very, very few ever find a supportive platform to talk about their experiences and outlooks.
– Brasscheck
He was an air war veteran from World War II involved in extremely hazardous missions.
And he didn’t think it was “The Good War.” He was a man of conscience.
Inspired by George Seldes and others, he blew through the propaganda smoke, became a historian, and looked at the US without the rose colored glasses.
A lot of people speculate on what the “Brass Check” in BrasscheckTV.com means.
We’re named after the title of the book “The Brass Check” by Upton Sinclair.
Nearly 100 years later, Sinclair’s book is still, far and away, the best book on new media corruption ever written. In fact, it’s a bit strange how severely news media criticism has regressed since giants like Sinclair and George Seldes walked the earth in the early to mid part of the 20th century.
Howard Zinn along with Daniel Ellsberg, Ralph Nader, Studs Terkel, I.F.Stone and many others were all subscribers to George Seldes’ “In Fact” and Seldes in turn was a student and colleague of Upton Sinclair.
Howard Zinn (1922-2010)
Most normal people want to contribute and give back.
Some people take it to an extreme and are willing to risk their lives.
These are noble impulses.
The problem is not thinking the whole proposition through.
Are you really “serving your country” by going where the devils in Washington send you to?
The greatest shame in America is that many of the nation’s most honorable, hard working, courageous people are serving the government instead of the nation’s highest principles.
There is s world of difference as Howard Zinn makes so eloquently clear in this short clip.
