Truman said “no”, Eisenhower said “yes”

On this day in 1953, the CIA staged a coup in Iran overturning its democratically elected leader.

We have been paying the price for this illegal act ever since.

Why did they do it?

Iran nationalized its oil. What does that mean? They told British Petroleum “the oil in our country belongs to us.”

This caused British Petroleum (BP) and the UK government to flip out.

They went to the US and asked to different presidents to intervene. Truman, to his great credit, said “no.” Eisenhower said “yes.”

The country was given over to the corrupt Shah who in exchange for billions in bribes and arms gave turned the country’s oil over to BP. To keep control over people who never elected him the Shah employed CIA torture experts to help set up a secret police.

And we wonder why there is turmoil in the region.

Unfortunately this “success” led to other CIA supported coups – in Guatemala, in Indonesia, in Vietnam, in the Congo, in the Dominican Republic, in Brazil, and in Chile.

Between 1947 and 1989, the United States tried to change other nations’ governments 72 times. Most of the attempts failed.

U.S. judge rules Iran abetted 9/11 attacks

A federal judge in Manhattan has ruled that Iran was complicit in the 9/11 attacks. Among the thousands killed in the terrorist strikes were more than a dozen Bucks County residents.  The judge, who received affidavits from members of the 9/11 Commission and three Iranian defectors, made the decision in a lawsuit filed on behalf of some of those Philadelphia area families, and others.

The decision is shocking, said University of Pennsylvania political science professor Ian Lustick.

“This is a major political statement and for the judge to establish it as accepted fact, or to claim that is, is to me shocking,” Lustick said. “I know of no significant evidence that Iran was involved that has been advanced seriously.”

Lustick said he doubts this case will set precedent. But he said he’s concerned it could stoke the fires for a U.S. military strike against Iran.

US President Barack Obamaâ€s Middle East policies seem increasingly problematic. His expanded use of missile strikes by Predator drones against targets in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and elsewhere – now being launched at a rate of about one every week – seem certain to create more “terrorists” than they kill. They arouse fierce anti-America sentiment not least because of the inevitable civilian death toll. Obama is said to decide by himself which terrorist suspect is to be targeted for killing in any particular week, as if to confer some presidential sanction on operations of very doubtful legality.

Even more worrying is Obamaâ€s apparently wilful sabotage of two diplomatic initiatives, one by Europeâ€s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, the other by Kofi Annan. Ashton has been leading an attempt by the P5+1 to negotiate a ‘win-win†deal with Iran over its nuclear programme, while Annan has been struggling to find a negotiated way out of the murderous Syrian crisis. Obama seems intent on compromising both initiatives.

Ashton managed to launch the P5+1 talks with Iran in Istanbul on April 14, after having agreed upon the ground rules with the chief Iranian negotiator, Saeed Jalili. She pledged at that time that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) would be “a key basis” for the talks, thus sending a clear signal that Iran, as a signatory of the NPT, had the right to enrich uranium up to 3.5pc for power generation and other peaceful purposes. She also declared that the negotiations would “be guided by the principle of step-by-step approach and reciprocity,” thus giving a strong indication that the sanctions would be lifted in stages once Iran gave up enriching uranium to 20 per cent and provided convincing evidence that it was not seeking nuclear weapons. Iran responded favourably to this approach and the talks got off to a good start.

Russia says preemptive strike on NATO missile system is possible

A top Russian military official says that if the U.S.-led missile defense project in Europe continues as planned, Moscow would not rule out attacking it.

Russia may consider a preemptive strike on a missile defense system in Europe if the U.S.-led NATO project continues as planned, a top official said Thursday.

Russian Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov, in a sign of the tension between Russia and the United States over the missile defense plans, said during an international conference that a strike by his country might be possible.

“A decision to use destructive force preemptively will be taken if the situation worsens,” Makarov said.

Makarov’s remark followed a statement by Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, who said Russian and U.S. consultations on the subject were “close to a dead end.”

Is the Obama administration using either leaks or black propaganda to sabotage Israel’s defence against the threat of genocide?

America’s former ambassador to the UN John Bolton certainly thinks so – and he is not a man given to rash speculation.

An article on the website of Foreign Policy magazine last Wednesday, written by former unofficial Yasser Arafat adviser and established Israel-basher Mark Perry, quoted four unnamed ‘senior diplomats’ and ‘intelligence officers’ saying that Israel had been granted access to air bases in Azerbaijan on Iran’s northern border.

The article suggested that this meant Israel planned to use Azerbaijan either for a strike at Iran or for other support for such an attack.

An Azeri official has subsequently said the claim that Azerbaijan has granted Israel access to its air bases for an attack is ‘absurd and groundless’. That denial, however, is clearly limited. And several observers have concluded that whether this is a genuine leak or disinformation, the story is an attempt to harm Israel by its principal western ally. Indeed, assuming it is not a total fabrication but is based on actual briefings, it is hard to conclude anything else.

On Fox News, Bolton said: ‘I think this leak today is part of the administration’s campaign against an Israeli attack.’ Bolton, a Fox News contributor, noted that a strike launched from Azerbaijan would be much easier for the Israelis than a strike launched from their own country – jets could stay over their targets longer and worry less about refueling. But he said tipping the Israelis’ hand by revealing ‘very sensitive, very important information’ could frustrate such a plan.

‘Clearly, this is an administration-orchestrated leak,’ Bolton told FoxNews.com. ‘This is not a rogue CIA guy saying I think I’ll leak this out. It’s just unprecedented to reveal this kind of information about one of your own allies.’

Obama Executive Order: Preparation For War With Iran?

EO is designed to combat imminent interruption in oil supplies

Some analysts fear that the Obama administration’s recently passed executive order represents more than just a power grab and could in fact be part of preparations for a war with Iran.

As we documented earlier this week, the “National Defense Resources Preparedness” executive order, an update to similar EO’s passed under previous presidents, empowers the federal government to seize control of the farming industry, “all forms of energy,” all “water resources”, “all forms of civil transportation”, all health resources, and “all other materials, services, and facilities, including construction materials.”

However, a key addition to the language made by Obama is that all these industries and means of production can be seized “under both emergency and non-emergency conditions”.

This represents an effort to lay the groundwork for the complete nationalization of the U.S. economy.

It could also mean the Obama administration is now on a war footing for an imminent conflict with Iran, according to market analysts.

The order “is either a serious power grip or another sign that inside the deep recesses of the White House, they are preparing for war,” Phil Flynn, an energy analyst at PFGBest, told MarketWatch.

The executive order mandates that departments of the federal government related to defense “be prepared, in the event of a potential threat to the security of the United States, to take actions necessary to ensure the availability of adequate resources and production capability, including services and critical technology for national defense requirements.”

“Bomb Iran” Billboard Turns Heads in West Valley City

Since last week, a billboard has been up alongside I-215 in West Valley City that reads “Bomb Iran” in large red letters. But if you think this is a message provided and paid for by pro-war hawks, you should look closer.

Above the large message, another line reads “Support the troops” with the word “troops” crossed out and replaced with “military industrial complex” a satirical jab at the power of war profiteers who benefit from the United States’ overseas conflicts. The billboard is turning heads, much more than a straightforward anti-war message ever would, says Connor Boyack, a local author who, along with D.J. Schanz, a local conservative activist, helped raise funds to put the billboard up.

“We didn’t want it to be an anti-war billboard that Utah conservatives would not think twice about and would just discredit as some liberal project,” Boyack says. That’s why he says the billboard was designed to shock, and also intrigue, viewers to check out the billboard’s Website www.BombIran.org. The site simply talks about the harm of overseas military campaigns. Boyack, who helped start the conservative group the Tenth Amendment Center and who wrote a book, Latter-day Liberty, discussing the compatibility of the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Libertarian politics, says the timing is right for the billboard as a growing cross-section of Americans of all political persuasions are growing weary of costly military operations and occupations.
